Professor K. B. Misra
Professor Krishna B. Misra
Inspired by the phenomenal improvement of quality and reliability of Japanese products during the 20th century, K. B. Misra (born 1943) took to reliability engineering as his career in 1967 and tried to emulate the same success in India to improve Indian manufactured products. He is an engineering graduate from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He also received his M.E., Ph.D. of the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee), where he became a full professor in 1976. He delivered lectures in industries to popularize the reliability concepts and helped the Indian government to set up an NCST working group on reliability implementation programme in 1976.
He then turned to academia to advance the discipline in institutions and published extensively in international journals. He has served on the editorial boards of several reputed international journals on quality, reliability, and safety, including IEEE Transactions on Reliability. Dr. Misra received an award from the IEEE Reliability Society for his contributions to research and education in the area of reliability.
In 1980, he moved to IIT Kharagpur, where he started the first postgraduate programme on reliability engineering in India in 1982 and established a Reliability Engineering in 1983. This centre produces several illustrious postgraduates in reliability engineering, who are working in various prestigious organizations in India and abroad. After his retirement from IIT Kharagpur in 2005, he founded RAMS Consultants, Inc. in Japiur, India and launched the International Journal of Performability Engineering.
Prof. Misra has had four decades of teaching, consultancy, and research experience in reliability. He has published many papers and five books, including a Handbook of Performability Engineering, which was published in 20008.
