Abstract:

In this short communication, we investigate how to extend the Guassian approximation method for performance evaluation of systems, from traditional optical on-off keying (OOK) systems to the emerging optical differential phase shift keying (DPSK) systems. We employ a recently  developed Karhunen-Loéve series expansion (KLSE) method to accurately calculate the exact probability density function (pdf) of the detected photo voltage for typical DPSK transceivers, and approximate the derived  pdf by Gaussian pdf. The Q-factor obtained by using the Gaussian pdf can then be corrected by comparing it to the exact result. The proposed method can be used to guide efficient numerical estimate as well as experimental  measurement of the noise-loading back-to-back DPSK system performance where the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) is not significant.
