Abstract: High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) employs a flexible coding unit (CU) partitioning pattern and advanced modes prediction method, which contribute to video coding efficiency. It adopts a rate distortion optimization (RDO) method to achieve the selection of coding parameters. Although the advanced coding technologies improve HEVC encoder performance, they also increase computational complexity. In both coding unit partitioning and the prediction mode decision process, HEVC must utilize the RDO method to calculate the rate-distortion (RD) cost of all candidates. The optimal candidate selection process is always accompanied by large computational complexity in the original HEVC. Therefore, a decision early termination method is important to omit complex RD calculations. In this paper, a region classification method based on motion diversity is proposed to early stop CU partitioning and the mode decision process. In this proposed method, if a CU is classified into a smooth region, it will stop further depth levels partitioning and limit intra modes in the candidates list. The fast coding algorithm can thereby omit large coding times and reduce computational complexity. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method can save on average 32% coding time with a negligible 0.049dB PSNR drop compared with original HEVC encoders.
